Childhood advertisements

So for this weeks task, we were to find a childhood advertisement and alter it to have a different message. I’m not going to lie… I struggled a lot with this one. Firstly the original ads I were after I couldn’t find but I also couldn’t find any ways I could substantially alter the film to create a different message. However, in the end, as all things go, I finished my video.

Now… a little background. So, as a child I had this strange fear of the inner health plus cartoon, only when it came on the TV of course but I just found him super creepy. I was a strange kid. Anyways, because of this flashback to young Taryn and her unexplainable dislike for the inner health plus character, I made him creepy. Well… I tried to.

I cut the footage, slowed it down, and repeated it. I added scary/creepy music in the background to convey that this cartoon is creepy. I kept it light hearted at the end with a clip from ‘The Office’ screaming “NOOO”, cause that’s how I felt.

Calming core – My DA pitch

Calming core is currently an Instagram page that utilises our own knowledge and experiences of stress and anxiety, in order curate content that helps others who may be going through a similar struggle. With all that is happening around the world and the influx of information we are receiving, times are strenuous and stressful, and can cause strain on a person’s wellbeing. Finding ways away from medication, our page is a place struggling student, or individuals suffering with mental health, can come to find creative, alternate, and accessible ways to cope all whilst at home. Not only will it provide tips but will also provide information on anxiety, and the importance on mental stability. We hope in the future to enhance our page onto something much bigger and more substantial such as a blog or website.

So far our page has reached around 71 people and is still growing. With all the amazing feedback, we’re very excited to see where this next semester takes our project.

Being in the now – From telegraph to cyberspace

Has a history buff that lives in the 21st century, it’s crazy to imagine a time where there was no internet, no instant messaging, or breaking news reports. In the 19th Century, it would take days if not weeks, for a letter carrying important news to arrive. Where as now, in the 21st century, news is almost instantly on our doorstep… actually more like in our hands. The introduction of mobile phones and the internet has allowed information to be carried with you at all times. A scroll through facebook or a quick google search, and we are given all the information we need. We share thanks to Samuel Morse and his invention of the telegraph back in 1837, because without it, we would not have the technological advancements in communication that we do today.

Could you ever imagine not having access to the internet? How about your mobile phone… how would you cope without it?

We are so accustomed to the world we live in, it’s hard to fathom waiting days for a single letter or telegraph carrying news to come to us. We are so used to a world where we take the technology and access to easy communication, for granted.

Therefore, I decided to bring in one of my favourite people to shed some light on his first-hand experience to the introduction of the internet… my grandfather.

Here we go again

As another session begins so does another DA idea. I won’t lie… as much as I loved ‘Tables With Taryn”, it wasn’t something I could incorporate into my daily routine as much as I needed it to. This session I’ve decided to dive deeper, to bring to life something that provides a more personal look into who I am and what I have to offer to the wider public. Then I met Lili via twitter, and we both agreed that we both had interest in creating a page that will be useful for others, and provide a sense of comfort.

So I introduce to you…. “calmingcore”.

As sad as it is to say goodbye to the much loved cooking channel, I feel as though this idea resonates more with my values and who I am as a person. I want to be helpful, and use my own experiences and tips to help others who have anxiety or may just be stressed due to uni, cope whilst at home… especially during these uncertain times. Keeping it realistic, relatable, simple, lifestyle based, and creative, I feel his page can be helpful for anyone in a difficult situation and needs a space to find some easy tricks to stay calm and distract the mind.

I am so excited to see what this DA and session has got in store for me, and super excited to share even greater content with everyone 🙂

Contextual essay

DA URLs:

Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/tableswithtaryn/

WordPresshttps://tarynctimeline.home.blog/tables-with-taryn/

My Digital Artefact originated as an instagram page aimed for university students based around the Illawarra region , that documented various local cafes and study spots, keeping in mind an affordable budget. As a local, born and raised in the Illawarra, creating a digital artefact that I had extensive knowledge about, as well as being informative and useful for other students like myself who enjoy the relaxation of a hot coffee and a nice meal regularly, would be both a successful and interesting concept. However, as a global pandemic interfered with our learning on campus, and access to local business’, my overall concept shifted from cafes to at home meals. My early ideation of ‘Tables with Taryn’, meant this change did not have significant consequences to my instagram and the audience it aimed to engage and provide useful information to. At the beginning of this process I created a starter pack that represented the type of person I framed my digital artefact for.

Throughout the semester and the building of ‘Tables with Taryn’, I had to keep in mind the concept FEFO. I faced many challenges that involved switching platforms, changing my overall style, and becoming organised ahead of time.

One of the best decisions I made as a part of this DA was switching from YouTube to WordPress. The reasoning behind this change was due to my personal preference of not showing my face, as well as wanting a platform that I could provide all the ingredients, method, personal reviews, a video tutorial, as well as, a pricing list, on one platform, putting the content in one frame. Taking inspiration from instagram accounts like ‘Tasty’ that used a birds eye view video style as a tutorial for their viewers, I created my own version of each recipe I was cooking or baking, and embedded it into my WordPress blog accompanied by al other information required. This was successful when matched with my YouTube engagement and Instagram engagement, as my statistics showed many views were coming through my WordPress blog.

Engaging with my followers and other instagram accounts, through instagram stories asking them questions about my content and what content they would like to see in the future, was another successful change I made throughout this process.

Followers feedback concluded that they wanted more content on meals instead of the content I was frequently posting about desserts

Not only did this help form a personal connection with the audience, and frame my content to fit the needs of my followers, it also opened a door for open communication between follower and producer via private messages.

Feedback from other food accounts, DA accounts, and followers allowed me to frame my ideas down, and allowed me to consider the content I was producing on a regular basis to my followers.

Using a combination of IGTV’s, blog posts, Youtube videos, and photos has demonstrated a variation of content. The use of hashtags and open suggestions from the public also demonstrated the importance of communication over social media platforms in the building of your account, or business.

Although my account didn’t reach the over 100 followers mark that I had originally aimed to reach, each of my followers have been engaging in liking my content, providing feedback and having a say in what content they wanted to see on their feed. The concept of framing has played an important role, without me fully realising, as without the concept of framing my ideas around the audience has been the most significant lesson I learnt throughout this trial.

I created a page that all university students living out of home, on campus, or in the Illawarra region, to find affordable, easy, and extremely delicious food, that they can make at home. I have enjoyed this experience, and I am extremely proud of the challenges I overcame and the content I produced.

Where I’m from – What I call home

I acknowledge where I’m from as a coastal town surrounded by beaches and beautiful nature. I acknowledge where I’m from as a state of mind, as I’m from what makes me purely happy, and where I have shared my most treasurable memories. I am from where my friends and family are. Using a combination of natural ambient sounds from around my home town, foley sounds, and myself playing the ukelele, I formed a relationship between image and sound that demonstrated what Wollongong felt to me. The laid back Wollongong lifestyle has run in my family for generations as my grandfather and great grandparents were born and raised in the town of Wollongong, back when it was mainly farm land. Therefore, incorporating both friends and family, and combining them with the calming sounds of the ocean, and nature demonstrated the overall importance the Gong has to who I am today.

Evolution of data traces

It’s crazy to think that before social media and the internet, people communicated in very different ways. We understand most of our history through writings in letters, journals, artworks, and even inscriptions on walls.

As someone who loves ancient history, I was super excited when Ted mentioned Pompeii and the inscriptions the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum left on the walls of the many structures and buildings of their time. This is how they left a trace of a deeper look into their lives, what was happening in this individuals life at that time, and how they felt at that moment way back before the volcanic explosion in 79 A.D.

“It’s the voices of the people who were standing there, and thinking this, and writing it. That’s why the graffiti are just so special and so enthralling.”

Rebecca Benefiel

As Ted said:

“Data tends to outlive its generators”

It’s important to see these inscriptions because it acts as a ‘prelude‘ for what comes next… how overtime our data traces become vastly different and more frequent. We have evolved through history from writing inscriptions and graffiti on the walls of Pompeii, to sharing status’ on facebook as frequently as we want , and reaching a much larger audience. We can now store the data we produce, not only on social media but also in our everyday life through surveillance, licence number, phone numbers etc… Our information was once invisible, but now overtime as social media grows, businesses earn more money, and the accessibility to our information becomes easier, we are subjects to less privacy. A recent example is the ‘Covid safe’ app or random facebook ads for a product pops up only minutes after you were talking about it, has raised concern amongst communities on the status of our privacy.

As a bit of fun I created a remediation representing what the inscriptions from Pompeii would look like in this modern age as twitter posts. Obviously many of the people that were apart of the grafitti could not be named so I messed around with a few common names around the time these inscriptions would have been placed on the wall. It’s fun to see how the way they wrote was very different to the way we write now, and express our emotions through communication.

Poached egg on Avo toast

So purely for you guys, I tried something new and poached an egg. Now I know what you’re thinking…. “how have you never poached an egg before?!?!”. Well before today i never had to. I’m more of a scrambled person at home and a poached person when out for a brunch. It’s just a lot more effort. Turns out it’s actually not as hard as i originally thought even though mine still didn’t turn out perfect.

Now it’s not the most straightforward demonstration, however, this tutorial demonstrates a more realistic approach to how I start my day most mornings with an avocado on toast and an egg (usually scrambled).

Ingredients;

  • Egg
  • Sourdough or bread
  • Avocado
  • Lemon
  • Salt/pepper
  • Rice vinegar

It’s pretty simple:

  1. Fill a saucepan about 1/2 or 2/3 of the way full with water. Put it over medium heat and boil. Once the water is boiled bring down the heat to light and wait for the water to change to a simmer
  2. Crack the egg separately into a small bowl or cup
  3. This is an optional step but one I recommend. Add approximately 1 tbsp of rice vinegar to the water.
  4. Stir the water. This is also optional but it is a technique used so that when the egg is added to the spinning water the egg whites wrap around the yolk.
  5. Slowly add the egg
  6. Put the lid back onto the pan and cook for between 3-4 minutes
  7. Make avocado toast as usual – Toast, avocado, salt/pepper, and some lemon.
  8. Lift the egg out of the water and put onto paper towel to absorb the extra moisture.
  9. Place the egg on top of your avo toast and enjoy 🙂

Tips:

  • Vinegar is a cheap step and adds flavour
  • Fresh eggs are better as the egg whites will form a firmer grip therefore creating the perfectly round poached egg scene at restaurants
  • Crack the egg into a small bowl or cup before hand because it helps you lower the egg into the water

Pricing:

This recipe is super easy to make with the resources you already have at home. Avocados vary in pricing but vary between $2.50 and $5 each. Eggs are pretty stock standard and are always pretty cheap. Any bread you already have at home will work just fine but if you want to be a little bit more fancy and little more tastier, sourdough is a great option. Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, bakers delight, or country grocer all stock sourdough that approximately costs $6 a loaf. Only a lemon wedge is needed, but for one lemon it’s usually under a dollar at $0.84 each. Last but not least is the rice vinegar. I used the Obento Japanese Rice Wine Vinegar 250ml which is only $2.

Algorithm control II

Android vs apple … the great debate for this weeks BCM112 lecture.

This weeks lecture focused on the topic of Algorithmic control II which entailed hardware platforms, access permission and ideologies of control. However, what most stood out for me was the concept of closed appliances vs generative platform… or in BCM112s case, the debate between android vs apple. I’m a strong apple fan hence my remediation. Over the years, the popularity of apple has influenced the electronic products I purchase such as an Ipad, Iphone, or Macbook Air, and it baffles me that anyone else buys anything different because this is what I’m used to.

The concept of closed appliances and generative platform, however, puts the difference of technology into perspective.

Closed appliances (Apple):

Apple has complete control over the platforms on the products they produce, it’s content, and the access we have as users.

Generative platform (Android):

A generative platform is based on the Linuz Kernel, the main component of a Linux operating system (OS) and is the core interface between a computer’s hardware and its processes. It’s an open and free platform that allows anyone to have access or to modify codes. It differs from Apple, as generative appliances such as android, don’t have control over its platforms, content and users.
